NOTE: Schools who have Insights need to upload 5 years worth of NAPLAN data

Step 1 - Extracting your NAPLAN data

Go to https://NAPLANds.vcaa.vic.edu.au
Click on “NAPLAN Data Service Tutorial and Help” to open the login screen

Enter your login credentials

Click on EXTRACT button to navigate to the wizard screen    


Export NAPLAN data from the data service
Save criteria for export (radio button or tick box).

Year – One year at a time
Test – Select All
Study – Select All
Groups – Select Outcome Level Data and Question Level Data

Click on the Extract button to generate your file, and then click on the newly created link to download the ZIP file. This will download to file to your computer.


You then need to extract the ZIP file to obtain the CSV file required for the import. Save in a location you can easily access.

REPEAT PROCESS FOR EACH GRADE AND YEAR YOU WISH TO IMPORT e.g. Year 3 2017, Year 3 2016 etc.

Step 2 -Import the data into Sentral Analysis

Once in Sentral Analysis > Setup Analysis > click on Import.

Select the test type - eg NAPLAN VIC

Upload the zip file for each year – e.g. 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017

Please note that one zip file for a calendar year can have files for all year groups as well as question level and outcome level files.

Your files would automatically be read to determine calendar year (2015, 2016 etc) and year group (Year 3, Year 5 etc).drop the NAPLAN file/s you have downloaded (or click to upload from saved location)

Once you have uploaded your files, click on the Upload Test Data button

Go to Analysis > Setup Analysis > Imported Files Screen

If there is a significant number of students that do NOT match the file you’re uploading, you may need to match students manually before importing.

Ideally you will get “Import Completed” if all students match initially.

If the file type is accepted but the import procedure has not been released; it
will show an “Awaiting Processing” status. This means that the Sentral team will investigate the import procedures and release the importer when available.

Step 3 - Insights sync

Review that ‘Insights sync status’ for all files is TRANSFER CANDIDATE.

Transfer Candidate refers to data transfer to insights. 

NAPLAN data for Insights will populate from Analysis.
Click on Insights and Get Started!

Before you can start with Insights, please complete the online form. 

Imported files will be listed

After you have read & ticked the T&C box, click on I’m ready to get insights
